Weekend Getaway to Vadattupara from Bangalore
A weekend trip from Bangalore to Vadattupara is a longer haul than a Kochi day trip, but it’s absolutely doable if you plan it as a proper two-day escape rather than trying to rush it. Here’s how to make it work.
How Far Is Vadattupara From Bangalore?
Bangalore to Kochi runs roughly 460–520 km depending on the route, typically 9 to 10 hours by road via Coimbatore on NH544, or via Salem and Coimbatore more generally. From Kochi, it’s another 60 km and 2 to 2.5 hours to Vadattupara itself. All in, expect a one-way drive of around 11 to 12 hours if you’re doing it entirely by road.
Given that drive time, a weekend trip works best if you break the journey up rather than attempting it in one straight push.
Recommended Ways to Get There
Option 1: Fly Into Kochi, Drive the Rest
By far the most practical option for a weekend trip. Cochin International Airport has strong daily connectivity with Bangalore, multiple direct flights covering the route in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. From the airport, it’s about a 1.5 hour taxi ride to Vadattupara, following the Kothamangalam route.
This turns what would be a 22-24 hour round trip by road into something genuinely manageable over a weekend.
Option 2: Train to Aluva, Then Taxi
If you prefer trains, Aluva Railway Station is your best bet, closer to the Kothamangalam side than Ernakulam Town, saving you extra time in city traffic. Several trains connect Bangalore to Kerala; check current schedules and book in advance since weekend trains fill up fast.
Option 3: Drive the Whole Way
If a road trip itself is part of the appeal, driving from Bangalore gives you the flexibility to stop at points along the way. This only makes sense if you’re extending the trip beyond a strict two-day weekend, the drive alone eats most of a single day each direction.
A Realistic Weekend Itinerary
Friday Evening
Fly into Kochi after work, or take an evening flight. Drive to a homestay near Vadattupara and settle in for the night, arriving late is fine since there’s little to do after dark anyway.
Saturday
Full day at Vadattupara. Spend the morning at Sundari Waterfalls while the light is good, explore the forest trails through the afternoon, and consider a stop at Bhoothathankettu Dam. For a full breakdown of what to prioritize, see our guide to the best tourist places near Vadattupara.
Sunday Morning
An early visit back to the falls or a stop at Thattekad Bird Sanctuary if birding interests you, especially rewarding if you’re visiting in winter. Head back toward Kochi by early afternoon to make your evening flight home.
Best Time for a Bangalore Weekend Trip
Since you’re committing real travel time and cost to get here, pick a season that maximizes your chances of good conditions. Post-monsoon (October–November) or winter (December–February) offer the best balance of strong waterfall flow, comfortable weather, and safer terrain. Avoid planning a tight weekend trip during peak monsoon, unpredictable weather and slippery conditions don’t pair well with a schedule that has no slack in it. See our full seasonal breakdown before booking.
Should You Stay One Night or Two?
Given the travel time involved from Bangalore, one night barely justifies the trip, you’d spend more time traveling than exploring. Two nights is the realistic minimum for the trip to feel worthwhile, and gives you enough buffer to enjoy Vadattupara without rushing straight back to the airport.
Packing for the Trip
Since you’re flying in and driving the rest of the way, pack light but don’t skip the essentials, grip footwear, water, snacks, and a first aid kit. See our full Vadattupara packing list for the complete rundown.
Worth the Distance?
For travelers from Bangalore used to closer weekend options like Coorg or Chikmagalur, Vadattupara is a genuinely different kind of trip, real forest, real wildlife, and a level of quiet that’s increasingly hard to find. If you’re willing to fly rather than drive the whole way, it’s a very achievable weekend escape.
